What is a database?
Answer
The broad definition of a database is "A structured set of data held in computer storage and typically accessed or manipulated by means of specialized software."
Most library databases contain articles from scholarly or popular journals, magazines, and newspapers. Some focus on specific disciplines, while others cover many different topics.
There are two options for accessing SCC Library's databases: OneSearch or the A-Z Databases page.
You can find the OneSearch box on the library homepage. It functions similarly to a search engine. It combines most of the databases the library subscribes to, and all of the books, e-books, and DVDs the library owns. This is a convenient way to include results from a lot of resources in one search.
On the A-Z Databases page, you can sort and filter a list of all the databases the library subscribes to, as well as Open Access databases the library recommends. You can use the drop-down menus to view databases on a certain subject (such as business, literature, social sciences); or databases that contain certain types of materials (such as articles, primary sources, or e-books).
If you are accessing our databases from off-campus, you will be prompted to log into Single Sign-On using your SCC email address and the same password you use for Canvas, to let the system know you are one of our students.
